New car for '07
NASCAR will debut its larger, boxier, safer "Car of Tomorrow'' beginning with 16 races in 2007.
Six of the races will be on the short tracks at Bristol, Martinsville and Richmond, with two more on the road courses at Watkins Glen and Sonoma. The one-mile tracks at Phoenix, Dover and Loudon each get two races, plus Darlington in the spring and the restrictor-plate race at Talladega in the fall.
The 2008 schedule includes 10 more debut races: two each at Daytona Beach, Fontana, Pocono and Michigan, the spring event at Talladega and the Brickyard 400. The rollout concludes in 2009 with two races each at Atlanta, Charlotte and Texas, and single events in Chicago, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Homestead.
The COT is four inches wider and two inches taller than today's Cup car. Its roll cage is moved back three inches and the driver's seat, steering wheel and instrument cluster are moved four inches to the right. There is more energy-absorbing "crushability'' on both sides and at the front and rear ends.
