Feb. 11--SESTRIERE, Italy -- Olympic competitions begin today with a modest schedule not likely to overshadow the doping scandals and technical snafus that have temporarily muted the start of these 20th Winter Games. The first four of the 84 medal events will be conducted at widely scattered venues, creating an immediate logistical test for the security screeners, wireless providers, and transportation officials already taxed by long lines, high demand and late buses.
