Sports sponsorship NEVER MIND THE SCORE Corporate spending on sports sponsorships rose above R4bn for the first time last year, exceeding the amount companies spent in 2004 by almost 20%.

Sports sponsorship has become the fastest growth segment in the SA advertising market over the past decade, a trend reflected globally.

But the spike in local spending seems puzzling, given the volatile performances of the teams playing the country's three national sports cricket, soccer and rugby. Added to this is the general incompetence of sports administrators.
