INDIA: Over 250 cases of leptospirosis have been reported in Karnataka in January. Leptospirosis is transmitted by contact with water contaminated with infected animal (usually rat) urine and is treated with antibiotics.

NORTH KOREA: Media sources reported a human case of avian influenza in Pyongyang last month. The case has not been confirmed by official sources. Travellers would be wise to avoid live animal markets and poultry farms and wash hands regularly.
