Feb. 8--A low-fat diet alone does not significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer, colorectal cancer or heart disease in women over 50, according to surprising new data from a long-running national study of nearly 49,000 women.

The $415 million study is the largest ever to examine the health impacts of fat in the diet. It appears to overturn decades of advice that has led to a flood of low-fat -- but not necessarily nutritious -- products.

"We now have good evidence that just reducing total fat isn't enough to improve your health," said Stanford researcher Marcia Stefanick, who worked on the study. "What we need to be thinking about is a healthy low-fat diet. We really need to home in on getting…
