Feb. 5--It was 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, and the 150 or so students already had spent two hours of their free time at North Mecklenburg High School talking about how to better get along with one another.

"It's 5 o'clock, time to go home," Julie McConnell, head of North Mecklenburg's science department, told one classroom. "No, we're staying," several students told her. The teacher directing the group said he too wanted to stay. The students were gathered at North Meck at the invitation of the Echo Foundation, which Stephanie Ansaldo heads.
