The NYSE tumbled Thursday as the S&P 500 and the Big Board composite both lost 0.9%, but volume was slightly lower.
Energy stocks had significant losses.
CNOOC gapped down, losing 3.55 to 83.30 on close to five times usual volume. Bear Stearns downgraded the Chinese offshore oil producer to peer perform from outperform. The stock remained well above its 72.70 buy point from a Jan. 10 breakout.
PetroChina also gapped down to close down 3.58 to 96.02. The company, which produces two-thirds of China's natural gas, is near its most recent buy point of 95.75.
