The key is to keep focusing on victory, authors Peter Killing, Thomas Malnight and Tracey Keys say in their forthcoming book, "Must-Win Battles: How to Win Them Again and Again."
The authors thumbnail must-win battles as MWBs, and define them as the three to five major goals your firm must reach to move to the next level. Forget a long list of must-wins, they say; you'll defeat your purpose. Must-win battles take massive amounts of energy and focus.
Such battles typically have five markers, the authors say. MWBs should:
** Be decisive. Impact is the top criterion for determining whether to marshal all resources for a key must-win. The question to ask yourself: "If we win this battle, what difference will it make?" If the difference won't be huge, move on.
Mission statements are usually too broad to form the basis for MWBs. Instead, look to specific goals that management is passionate about, and pinpoint key targets needed to keep shareholders on board.
