Byline: SEAN HIGGINS
Republican lawmakers elected Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, Thursday to become the House's new majority leader. He replaces Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who had stepped down in the face of legal troubles.
Boehner defeated House Whip Roy Blunt, R-Texas, the acting House Majority leader, and Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz. Boehner beat Blunt on the second ballot, by a vote of 122-109. Shadegg dropped out after the first ballot.
There are 231 House Republicans. A majority of 116 votes is needed to win a leadership race.
Boehner told reporters after the vote he was "humbled" by the party's support. Blunt congratulated Boehner on his victory and called on Republicans to "restore Americans' faith" in government.
"I'm confident John Boehner will be a leader we can unite around as we move forward to do the hard work Americans sent us here to do," Blunt said in a statement.
The vote represents a rebuke by House Republicans of their own leadership team, as represented by Blunt. It also showed unwillingness on the lawmakers' part to radically upset the status quo on Capitol Hill. Boehner emerged as the GOP's compromise candidate.
