Feb. 2--Andrew "Sam" Haywood didn't just preach his belief that education is a family affair. He lived it. On Tuesday, the longtime Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools educator talked to parents about getting their children library cards. He died Wednesday at 72, after a fall while returning home from a full day's work. He used a walker because of a balance disorder but refused to slow down. Haywood, the principal who opened Independence High in 1967 and saw it through the tumult of desegregation, retired from CMS in 1992.
