SYDNEY, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - Australian retirees are living on an average of only A$22,000 (US$16,640) per year, pushing some to gamble or even consider breaking the law to fatten their wallets, new research shows.
Citibank's latest Retirement Index has also revealed that almost one million of the nation's retirees have returned to the workforce since leaving it.
Citibank head of investments Andrew de Vries said Tuesday the general rule of thumb for retirement income is two-thirds of final annual salary.
But he said for many Australian retirees, that level of income is only covering essentials.
"Early retirement and staying permanently retired is getting harder for just about everyone," Mr de Vries said.
"Those who've done the proper planning and started saving early are in the box seat.
"But most retirees are being forced to supplement their income because what they have to live on is just not enough - something's gotta give."
