SEOUL, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - South Korea's consumer prices rose at the fastest pace in eight months in January, mainly due to a rise in prices of agricultural products and public services ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, a government report showed Wednesday.
Consumer prices in Asia's fourth-largest economy rose 2.8 per cent in January from a year earlier, compared with a 2.7-percent annual gain the previous month, according to the report by the National Statistical Office.
The October annual gain was higher than a median forecast of 2.6 per cent in a poll by Yonhap Infomax, the financial news arm of Yonhap News Agency.
The consumer price index (CPI) was also up 0.8 per cent in January from December, accelerating from a 0.3-percent on-month rise the previous month.
The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose 1.7 per cent year-on-year in January, slowing from a 1.9-percent annual rise the previous month.
