SYDNEY, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - Conditions in Australia's manufacturing industry steadied last month as supplier deliveries strengthened while inventories declined.
The Australian Industry Group-PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) performance of manufacturing index (PMI) eased by 3.3 points to a seasonally adjusted 50.2 in January.
The positive December result of a revised 53.5 (from 53.1) and the January result mark the first consecutive readings over 50.0 - a level that indicates that manufacturing activity is expanding.
Ai Group chief executive Heather Ridout said the year has begun on a positive note and the challenge will to be to consolidate this early improved performance.
"This will not be an easy task for the industry given the restructuring that is taking place and the unrelenting intensity of competition in both domestic and global markets," she said.
