3 Retailer Chester Cadieux has turned the convenience-store industry on its ear -- by focusing on store environment, worker commitment and ironclad guarantees.
Cadieux is chairman and co-founder of Tulsa-based QuikTrip, one of the most profitable filling station and convenience-store chains in the Midwest, Atlanta, Dallas and Phoenix.
Annual sales exceed $6 billion, and have grown the last 15 years by more than 600%. The privately held chain has 450-plus stores.
Cadieux's secret? He scores big with repeat business. Customers keep coming back because of top-flight service and attractive, well-organized sites. QuikTrip closes older stores about as fast as it builds new ones. Founded in 1958, the chain's "average store is just seven years old," a QuikTrip representative said.
Revving Profits
Bonuses and fast-track career paths encourage workers at all levels to stress strong service. Each store is its own profit center, and employees are responsible for all aspects of the business.
