Russia asserts role in WTO, G-8

In a lengthy news conference, President Vladimir Putin called the U.S. the last big hurdle for World Trade Organization membership and insisted the G-8 fully supported Russia's membership. He warned foreign powers not to use nongovernmental organizations to meddle in Russian affairs. He also said authorities will not nationalize oil firms.

GEORGIA: The country began importing natural gas from Iran to help with an energy crisis, as Georgia's leader vowed to cut dependence on Russian fuel. Mysterious explosions Jan. 22 on the Russian gas pipeline cut off sup- plies, leaving millions shivering.

MEXICO: 300 federal police arrived in the border town of Matamoros to help police fight drug trafficking. The reinforcements follow an incident north of the Rio Grande between a military-type vehicle equipped with heavy machine guns, and Texas police.
