Merck Q4 beats, but sales flat
The drug maker said Q4 EPS rose 28% to 64 cents ex items, beating views by 2 cents, while sales were flat at $5.77 bil. Sales of its top drug Zocor, a cholesterol-lowering drug that loses patent protection in June, fell 18% to $1.1 bil. Also, Merck will set aside $295 mil more for its legal-defense fund, bringing the fund's balance to $685 mil. It faces more than 9,600 product-liability suits over its recalled pain reliever Vioxx. Merck affirmed its '06 outlook. Shares rose 4 cents to 34.50.
Elan loss narrows, stock surges
The Irish drug maker that is awaiting a verdict from U.S. regulators on a key suspended drug lost $58.3 mil in Q4, less than $107 mil lost last year and better than analysts projected. Revenue rose 13% to $140.4 mil. Shares jumped 8.5% to 15.91.
** Wyeth, known for medicines like Advil and Robitussin, said Q4 earnings fell 8% to 59 cents a share, a penny below views. Revenue rose 2% to $4.75 bil, below expectations. Shares fell 1.5% to 46.25.
