Titanic struggle
QUITE a storm has blown up around Bernard Hill, who played Captain Edward Smith in the blockbuster film Titanic. Hill has livedfor the past 10 years in rural Suffolk, which he says he loves for its tranquility.
In a national newspaper interview, however, his praise for the county doesn't extend to its indigenous motorists.
'Beware Suffolk drivers smoking a pipe or wearing a hat,' he warns. 'They drive around here at 10 mph below the speed limit. There's never any urgency. They just poodle around.'
Unsurprisingly, 61-year-old Hill is being strongly criticised in the letters pages of the East Anglian Daily Times. Typical is this comment by Bob Hoggar of Snape: 'You would have thought he would have learned the dangers of speed when, portraying Captain Smith, he crashed the Titanic.'
Richard van't Zelfde, who recently joined Rotterdam maritime and transport law firm Smallegange, van Dam ' van der Stelt Attorneys, certainly shows determination.
