Byline: Forum issues call to abandon plan ahead of review of EC white paper, writes Justin Stares
MARITIME industry leaders yesterday called for the European Commission to abandon 'unrealistic' plans to intervene in the field of transport.
The Maritime Industries Forum said the commission should drop its policy, designed to decouple economic growth from transport growth, as well as plans to 'enforce' modal shift upon transport users.
The forum, which encompasses all maritime industries on a European Union level, released a statement ahead of the mid-term review of the commission's white paper on transport policy, which was launched five years ago.
'The original philosophy of the white paper to dislink (sic) economic growth from inherent transport growth is unrealistic and should be abandoned,' the forum said.
'Whereas the philosophy of the modal shift is supported, the MIF strongly feels that this modal shift should not be enforced upon trade.'
