Byline: Holed Ece abandoned by crew in Channel but no pollution detected, writes Andrew Spurrier
A BADLY holed Turkish-operated chemicals tanker was being towed towards the French port of Le Havre yesterday evening following a collision with a Polish Steamship bulk carrier 50 nautical miles west of the French port of Cherbourg.
The 11,290 dwt, Marshall Island-flagged Ece, carrying 10,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid, was abandoned by its crew early yesterday morning and was listing 25[degrees]. It was placed under tow in mid-afternoon by the French rescue and salvage vessel Abeilles Liberte.
The maritime prefecture in Cherbourg said that, barring incidents en route, it would go to Le Havre, which was the port best equipped to receive it and its cargo.
French divers, who inspected the ship's hull in the early afternoon found a 5 m by 2 m hole under the waterline on its port wing tank but reported that there was no cargo leakage.
The 1988-built Ece's master and chief engineer and two French technicians were also reported to have gone on board the ship to assist the salvage operation.
