End to all-water container service will cause problems. Solution is needed.

Pacific Northwest shippers are preparing to live without all-water container service to Europe. The changes are a result of a decision made by Compagnie Generale Maritime (CGM), Atlantic Container Lines (ACL) and Hapag-Lloyd to discontinue service and shift vessels from their joint service that provided a weekly container service between the Pacific Northwest and Europe via the Panama Canal.

CGM and ACL each withdrew two vessels from the joint service in late 1992 and early 1993. Hapag-Lloyd will enter into a vessel-sharing agreement with Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) and Nippon Yusen Kaisha …
