Jan. 30--THE ISSUE: There are only two days left to apply for 2006-07 Charlotte-Mecklenburg school assignments. Then the district will see how its new plan works. Some things are easier now, but this year parents are required to sign a school agreement to apply for a magnet program. About 10,000 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools families have applied for academic options in 2006-07, and procrastinators have until Tuesday to join them. Parents who have applied for magnet seats need to make sure they've signed a new "magnet compact" or their kids will land on waiting lists, student placement director Scott McCully says.
