SENATE DEMOCRATS threw everything they could at Samuel Alito. They distorted his decisions, and his memos. They questioned his ethics. They even tried to paint him as a bigot. But by the end of a week of hearings on his nomination to the Supreme Court, it was the Democrats who had been diminished. Alito was able to explain what his cases had really held, and why. He pointed out that his participation in a case involving Vanguard mutual funds was a non-issue: Although he holds funds with Vanguard, neither he nor the company stood to lose or gain anything in the case. The records of Concerned Alumni for Princeton corroborated his assertion that he had little to do with the organization, and that his joining it did not prove that he hates women and minorities.
