Heinrich Harrer died on January 7 at the age of 93. Harrer was a member of the first team to conquer the North Face of the Eiger, back in 1938. An Austrian, he joined the SS around that same time, not because he knew or cared anything about politics, but because they offered him a job as a ski instructor. Sent to Kashmir in 1939 to seek challenging mountains, Harrer was interned by the British, escaped, made his way to Tibet, and became tutor to the young Dalai Lama.
