I was surprised to note that NR's discussion (in The Week, Dec. 19) of a proposed Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, D.C., was inaccurate. The proposed plaza memorial will not be "on the Mall," but will be across the street from the Mall, south of Independence Avenue, between 4th and 6th Streets.
This urban site is particularly appropriate because the surrounding structures relate directly to some of Eisenhower's major accomplishments. These nearby buildings--housing entities such as the FAA, the Department of Education, NASA, and Voice of America--remind us of his decisive role in transportation, education, space, and the spread of international information.
Eisenhower's role in history benefits from the objectivity of expert historical evaluation, not, as you suggest, from the use of overly "generous" criteria. Since the end of his second ...
