Jan. 29--Is student testing fair? Can public school funding be made more equitable? Is the looming teacher shortage unavoidable?

Educators addressing these notoriously complex issues day to day, state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, says, might feel caught in a round of "Whack-a-Mole."

Simitian scored some chuckles for his reference to the frustrating carnival game from the nearly 100 educators, elected officials and parents who turned out Saturday in Palo Alto to share their concerns about the state of K-12 schools.

The humor underscored the frenetic real-life pace of problems facing the education community.
