Jan. 27--SAN BENITO -- The embroidered apple on the space mission patch appeared next to the name McAuliffe, the first teacher to become an astronaut, and represented the mission of education on what became the last flight of Space Shuttle Challenger. Twenty years ago today, Challenger blew apart, the explosion blamed on a poorly designed seal in the solid rocket booster. The explosion killed the seven crew members, including Christa McAuliffe.
