* It's official. Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito is a conservative. Or, to be perfectly precise, he was a conservative when, in 1985, he completed an application for a promotion in the Reagan Justice Department. In that document, Alito wrote that he believed in "limited government, federalism, free enterprise, the supremacy of the elected branches of government, the need for a strong defense and effective law enforcement, and the legitimacy of a government role in protecting traditional values." Sounds good to us. Alito also wrote that he was proud of his work on cases "in which the government has argued in the Supreme Court that racial and ethnic quotas should not be allowed and that the Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion." Sounds good, too. ...
