The Pew Hispanic Center (a left-leaning organization, yet) estimated the 2004 figures as 455,000 legal and 562,000 illegal. That latter number reinforces an illegal population already here that officially numbers 11 million, but is possibly much larger. Legal immigration has slowed somewhat because of tighter scrutiny following 9/11, and a national economy less attractive and labor-hungry than in the 1990s boom years.
