Jan. 19--When Gov. Mike Easley named Associate Justice Sarah Parker of Charlotte to succeed I. Beverly Lake Jr. as chief justice of the N.C. Supreme Court, he chose an amply experienced, widely admired judge to lead the state's highest court. She has served on the N.C. Court of Appeals from 1985-93 and the Supreme Court since then. The court's lone Democrat, she is regarded as a fairly conservative jurist. She has worked both in the courtroom and on the campaign trail. Former Chief Justice Jim Exum once joked that wherever two or three were gathered, Sarah Parker likely was there to ask for votes.
