Many are the conferences, loud the talk, and long the hours dedicated to articulating the meaning of "sustainable development," which the World Commission on Environment and Development defined as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Environmentalists push these lofty concepts, but the real-world practitioners of such ideals ought to be the architects, designers, landscapers, contractors, and a host of allied professionals who develop housing and office buildings, cities, and towns. They are the ones who integrate the so-called "built environment" into the landscape and embody the ideals of the culture in their designs. …
