West Virginia University Tech plans return to NAIA.

Jan. 14--West Virginia University Tech's return to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics could mean the end to its rivalries with the University of Charleston and West Virginia State.

Tech announced plans Friday to end its affiliation with the West Virginia Conference after 80 years and begin competing again in the NAIA. All WVC schools competed in the NAIA until the league switched to NCAA Division II membership in 1995-96.

The stumbling block for continuing basketball series with WVC members would be a regional rankings system that awards no points and doesn't even count victories against non-Division II opponents.
