ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The necessary qualifications of an IRB institutional official (IO) are not spelled out in OHRP regulations, but the ideal IO should not be a high-level official, such as, a university president, advised Richard Blanco, assistant vice president for research and regulatory affairs, University of Minnesota.

An institution official himself, Bianco was one of several speakers at the April 19 Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP) meeting here who commented about the problems that IRBs, particularly institutional officials, face in today's regulatory environment.
