MORRISON: What's better than a 911 Carrera S? A Carrera 4S, you say? Not so fast, Ferdinand. Porsche's top-o'-the-line-until the Turbo lands-all-wheel-drive 911 certainly is a smoking piece of hardware, and I'm sure plenty of people need to smoke a cigarette after they're done driving it. For about $6,000 more than the price of the rear-driver, you get a rear-biased awd system, nearly two-inch wider rear fenders necessary to handle the increased track and wider tires, and even a larger fuel tank.
That's all great, but the rear-drive 997 already is one of the world's greatest driver's cars. Installing awd is kind of like adding a few extra kilos of plutonium to an ICBM just for the heck of it. Yeah, it'll make an even bigger bang when it goes off, but it's overkill. I love the look of the even fatter fender flares and wider rubber, but I wish Porsche would offer the "wide body'' dimensions as a stand-alone option.
