Williams signs Wurz
Austrian driver Alexander Wurz inked a deal to become the Williams F1 team's test and reserve driver. Wurz, 31, has been a McLaren tester for the last five seasons. He also drove for Benetton from 1997 to 2000. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.
Got a light?
Three French newspapers were fined for publishing photos of F1 drivers whose driver suits have tobacco logos on them. Le Point, Le Monde and Les Echos were sued by a group called the Rights of Non-Smokers. Tobacco advertising is illegal in France, and a court fined the papers between $1,000 and $1,500 each.
Meanwhile the European Commission threatened the national governments in Hungary and Spain with prosecution in the European Court of Justice if they proceed with plans to introduce motorsport-specific laws to dodge the new European Union tobacco advertising legislation.
Strong class?
Being named rookie of the year has never guaranteed success in NASCAR, just as missing it has never ruined any careers. Former champs Bill Elliott, Darrell Waltrip, Terry Labonte and Cale Yarborough missed, as did Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin and Carl Edwards. Among those who won it: Skip Manning, Ronnie Thomas, Ron and Ken Bouchard, Dick Trickle and Jimmy Hensley.
