Red Light/Green Light might be a children's game, but Red Line/Green Line is an automotive product and marketing strategy that GM's Saturn division hopes will become serious automotive business.
Red Line is the high-performance Saturn Ion coupe: Supercharging boosts the 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine to 205 hp, unchecked by traction control, with enlarged front and rear discs-you get the idea.
Green Line is about, well, green, as in environmentally friendly, as in hybrid.
Officially, the Green Line is the 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line, the first vehicle GM's third hybrid system will propel.
It will be used in the Chevrolet Malibu in 2007 before migrating to other GM platforms. GM's initial "two-mode'' hybrid powertrains have been used in full-size transport buses, and a "flywheel alternator'' hybrid setup is available in full-size pickups.
The '07 Green Line's "belt alternator starter'' system improves fuel economy 20 percent, Saturn says. GM expects the Green Line's EPA ratings to be 27 mpg in the city cycle and 32 on the highway. At 32 mpg, the Green Line is the highest-highway-mileage SUV available, and adds just $2,000 to the base vehicle's price.
