The spectre of company cloning reared its ugly head as the channel moved into a hectic year-end period, after distributor Comstor warned it had seen an increased number of fraudulent transactions over the past few weeks.
Despite attempts by Companies House (CH) and the Metropolitan Police Service to crack down on company identity theft, the distributor has changed its policy for delivering to a non-standard delivery address for resellers.
In a letter to its customers entitled "Avoiding Fraudulent Transactions with Non-Standard Delivery Addresses", the distributor stated:"Comstor has, over the past few weeks, been made aware of an increasing number of fraudulent transactions taking place whereby company details are being cloned.
"To protect both our interests, Comstor has taken the decision not to facilitate delivery to any non-standard delivery address without a fax copy purchase order detailing in full the delivery address and verbal confirmation from an authorised member of our customer's purchasing team."
The Datatec subsidiary was unavailable to comment further.
