The value of the UK software sector would grow by billions of pounds in the next three years if piracy was reduced by 10 per cent, according to a Business Software Alliance-sponsored IDC study.
The UK software industry is currently valued at almost 40bn [pounds sterling], with 27 per cent of sales counterfeit. As well as an additional 11 bn [pounds sterling] in value, a drop in the piracy rate to 17 per cent would generate 34,000 jobs and 2.8bn [pounds sterling] in tax revenues between 2006 and 2009.
IDC said the UK software sector includes more than 65,000 businesses, employed more than half a million people and contributed 25.9bn [pounds sterling] in tax revenues.
The report findings are clear evidence that the channel, IT industry at large, as well as the Government would benefit from a reduction in software piracy.
Mike Newton, spokesman for the BSA, said: "Tony Blair has received a lot of flak for giving up money to the EU, but we are giving up 2.8bn [pounds sterling] to the pirates every year."
