Jan. 7--The Thailand-US free trade talks are approaching a crucial stage, highlighting market access to the services sector, as negotiators prepare for meetings in Chiang mai from Monday to Friday next week.
As Thailand's services sector, including finance and telecommunications, is far less competitive than in the United States, the issue is highly sensitive locally and has not been touched on much in the previous rounds of talks that started in mid-2004.
But Thailand cannot avoid the issue any more, as the leaders of the two countries have pledged to complete a deal by midyear at latest.
