Jan. 6--An increase in sugar prices, if approved, would have no significant impact on retail customers, according to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Meanwhile, the Commerce Ministry has asked sugar millers to allocate more sugar into the market to ease a shortage.
Mr Thaksin said real demand and supply of sugar in the market would be taken into account in the government's decision whether or not to float the price of sugar, which has been capped for many years.
"Sugar consumption per capita of Thai people is only two kilogrammes per month, so if the sugar price is raised it will have no significant impact on them."
