Jan. 6--Third-generation (3G) mobile phone services have emerged as crucial components of operators' strategies for 2006 as they seek to popularise a potentially lucrative revenue stream.
After a long incubation period, 3G technology is becoming the next big thing for mobile phones, but consumers still appear lukewarm to the idea of paying a lot for the likes of movies and multimedia on the tiny screen.
Based on global industry estimates, 3G services are expected to cost operators around $50 per subscriber based on voice services alone. This means that Thailand's Big Three -- AIS, DTAC and TA Orange -- would need to invest a combined $1.5 billion (60 billion baht) for a 3G nationwide rollout.
