NYSE stocks extended their New Year's gains Wednesday, lifting the Dow 0.3%, the S&P 500 0.4% and the small-cap S&P 600 0.6%. Volume edged slightly lower.
Steel-Specialty Alloys were among the day's biggest gainers. RTI International Metals leapt 2.01 to 41.45, clearing a three-month base on four times average turnover. Allegheny Technologies gapped up and rose 2.40 to a new high of 38.45 on six times normal trade. Both firms produce specialty alloy products for the aerospace and other industries.
Many Metal Ores stocks fared well. Southern Copper vaulted 5.23, or 8%, to a new high of 74.59 on double usual trade. The copper producer said its Mexico mines weren't impacted by a strong earthquake that hit northern Mexico ...
