Byline: REINHARDT KRAUSE
Verizon Communications' New Year's resolution likely will be to slim down -- after it bulks up through the MCI acquisition, that is.
The nation's No. 2 phone company behind AT&T is expected to close its $8 billion purchase of long-distance firm MCI in early January. All regulatory approvals are in.
Verizon will gain a large roster of corporate clients from MCI.
Even as it gets bigger, Verizon is exploring the sale of its Yellow Pages directory business and, according to analysts, the idea of spinning off rural phone systems to shareholders.
Verizon put its rural spinoff plans on hold after agreeing to buy MCI in early 2005, in part to get state approvals for that merger.
The faster Verizon can shed many residential phone lines, the faster it can upgrade its network from copper to fiber-optic wiring in order to offer services similar to cable TV companies.
