Discovery may aid malaria drugs
Scientists in India and France have painstakingly mapped the structure of a key protein that helps the one-celled malaria parasite infect human cells after it is transferred through mosquito bites. They found the protein, which the parasite uses as it binds to red blood cells' surfaces before replicating inside them and eventually causing them to burst, has a unique atomic structure. With resistance to current drugs rising, the map may allow drug makers to target the protein directly and with precision, analyzing potential weaknesses.
