Indexes Extend Tuesday's Gains
1The Nasdaq led with a 0.9% increase, helped by a jump in Google and other Internet stocks. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% to a 4 1/2-year closing high. The small-cap S&P 600 rose 0.6%. Sharon Suffers A Major Stroke
2Israeli PM Ariel Sharon was rushed into surgery late Wed. after a "significant" stroke led to a brain hemorrhage. It was his 2nd stroke in a month. Sharon, 77, recently left the right-wing Likud to form a centrist party ahead of upcoming elections. If he has to step aside, it will roil Israeli politics. Also, Palestinian militants used bulldozers to crash through a Gaza barrier into Egypt.
Retailers Had So-So Holidays
3Dec. same-store sales likely rose 3.1% vs. a year ago, Retail Metrics estimated, vs. its prior view of 3.2%. They rose 3.9% ex Wal-Mart, which already said comps rose 2.2%. Specialty apparel did well: After Wed.'s close, Citi Trends, Zumiez, Men's Wearhouse and Aeropostale posted strong results. But Hot Topic and Too Inc. fell short. Most retailers report Dec. sales on Thurs.
