Byline: SEAN HIGGINS
The battle over Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito heated up Wednesday as the nation's top legal group gave him a strong endorsement while leading left-wing groups rallied in opposition.
The dueling announcements recalled last year's confirmation fight.Chief Justice John Roberts also received the American Bar Association's nod and the ire of left-wing groups. The Senate confirmed him easily, 78-22.
Alito likely faces a bigger battle. He has a much longer paper trail than Roberts, giving critics more to chew over.
He would also replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, a key swing vote on the court. That may give some moderate senators pause.
Senate hearings are set to begin on Monday. GOP leaders hope for a final vote by Jan. 20.
