Jan. 5--More than 700 cities across the country have named streets for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. But not Charlotte.
City Council member James Mitchell hopes to change that, by renaming Stonewall Street or part of Independence Boulevard for the civil rights leader. The full City Council will consider the idea Monday, a week before the annual King birthday celebration.
"It hit me like a ton of bricks," said Mitchell, a Democrat. "We don't have a street named after him in Charlotte."
Mitchell said he tried to pick streets that were visible but had few addresses that would require changing.
