Thoratec shot up 2.17 to a five-year high of 22.86, swapping three times usual volume.
Lazard Capital upgraded the heart pump producer to buy from neutral, saying rivals lag in clinical trials. The stock had found support at its 10-week moving average.
Meridian Bioscience gained 1.91 to 22.05 on more three times average volume. The Cincinnati-based biotechnology firm broke out of a 10-week cup-with-handle base after lingering near its 10-week moving average the past two weeks. It had double-digit earnings growth the past nine quarters while sales grew between 4% and 39%.
