NYSE stocks started off 2006 on a strong note, with the composite rallying 2%. The S&P 500 gained 1.6%, while the midcap S&P 400 and small-cap S&P 600 rose 1.5%. Volume rose sharply, too.
Watsco gapped up 3.43 to 63.24, bouncing off its 50-day moving average on triple its usual trade. The stock is trading 7% below its all-time high of 67.65, possibly working on a new base. The distributor of air conditioning and heating gear has the best EPS and Relative Price Strength Rating in its industry group.
TIM Participacoes surged 2.85, or 11%, to a four-year high of 28.13, clearing a five-week flat base on double its average volume. The Brazilian mobile service provider has rallied 65% since it cleared a long base in mid-September at 17.
