The S&P 500 fell 0.5% Friday to close the year up 3%. The small-cap S&P 600 dropped 0.7% but finished up 7% in 2005. NYSE volume grew but was still below average.
Quanex fell 0.96 to 49.97 on heavy trading. The stock has fallen 26% from its 67.71 peak after its September breakout failed. The stock later sliced through its 200-day on huge volume on Dec. 2. Back then, the maker of specialty steel products said it expected its operating profit margin to "return more to the middle of their historic range."
Central Pacific Financial slipped below its 50-day moving average, down 0.83 to 35.92.The Hawaii-based consumer and business lender has moved virtually sideways since making a high of 38.79 in February. Central acquired mortgage loan broker Hawaii HomeLoans in the third quarter.
