Sixteen years ago, in Plain City, Utah, Randy, Keith, Gary and Kevin Knight decided to start a trucking business.
The four -- each a cousin to or a brother of the other -- were all veterans of the trucking business with more than 80 years of experience between them. The idea was to launch a short- and medium-trip trucking operation while keeping costs low and management efficient.
They succeeded. Today, Knight Transportation is one of the major players in the trucking industry. The company was incorporated in 1989 and within five years had 200 trucks on the road. Today, it owns 3,279 tractors and 7,857 trailers. It serves most of the U.S. through its 19 terminals across the country.
In 2004, Knight's sales totaled $442 million, up 30% from 2003.
